Vision

The Role of Corporate Responsibility

The Israeli business sector is not only an economic driver, but also a leading force in shaping society and responding to its many challenges and opportunities. We believe that a network of companies jointly committed to responsible and ethical business practices has the power to make Israel a more sustainable, transparently governed, and socially supportive place for all its people — whether as employees or consumers.

Over time, responsible corporate conduct builds relationships of mutual trust between the many groups that make up Israel’s social fabric. And that is a strategic asset whose value cannot be overstated.

Our Story

From a social enterprise in the garage to the leading organization in the field

Maala was founded in September 1998 as a business–social initiative led by Talia Aharoni, following her career in managing the public relations firm Gitam Porter Novelli, together with the Kahanoff Foundation— a private foundation based in Canada headed by the late Shira Herzog.

The founding meeting of Maala, held at the offices of the Herzog Fox Neeman law firm, brought together twelve senior executives from across the Israeli business sector, who unanimously adopted the organization’s mission:

  • To serve as the leading and authoritative voice at the intersection between business and society in Israel.

  • To support businesses in improving their performance by adopting a strategic, business-oriented approach to social commitment.

The establishment process—supported by the Ford Foundation under Israel Program Director Aaron Back—included research and feasibility assessments led with the guidance of Bob Dunn, then President of Business for Social Responsibility (BSR) in the United States, and the creation of a business plan and metrics for success.

About four years after its founding, Maala became a membership-based organization, sustained by Israeli businesses committed to its mission and vision.

Over the years, Maala established its annual Corporate Responsibility Conference, a unique gathering of business, public, and civil society leaders, bridging Israel’s economic and social spheres. Maala also created the Maala ESG Index, establishing a foundation for measurement and standardization, and the CSR mangers training, which formalized the profession of responsible business management in Israel.
